Four steps, and the last one matters more than the rest.
Most rank trackers keep this part to themselves. It decides what a check costs you and whether the number on the row can be trusted.

You add a keyword and pick a country
The first check starts immediately. Each keyword is tied to one domain and one country, so the same keyword can be tracked separately for different markets.

The check runs in the background
A full scan can take more than a minute, so it does not run inside your browser request. You can keep using the page while it works, and several keywords selected together queue up and run one after another.

Result pages are read until your domain is found
The scan reads search result pages in order and stops as soon as it finds you. A keyword ranking in the top 10 costs one page. A keyword nobody can find costs the full 50 results, so ranking well is also the cheapest thing to track.

A failed lookup is not written as a loss
If the scan cannot complete, you are not charged for it and your previous position stays on the row. The page tells you the scan did not finish. A rank you still hold is never recorded as a drop because a lookup failed.
Checks run against your monthly allowance first. When the allowance is used up, checks continue and are paid from your credit balance, and the allowance returns on the 1st.

Dormant accounts stop spending

What Rank Tracker does not do.
A rank tracker is only worth what its numbers are worth. These are the places where this one stops, put in writing so you meet them here rather than three weeks in.
It does not look below position 50. If your keyword is not there, it says so instead of estimating.
It does not send email or Slack alerts yet. You see changes when you open the page.
It does not export to CSV, and it does not group or tag keywords.
It does not separate mobile and desktop positions. One position is recorded per keyword and country.
It does not read your Search Console data. That is Keyword Opportunities, a separate module.
It does not promise rankings. It records them.

Rank Tracker was rebuilt around two questions that had no answer in the panel: what is a check costing me, and can I trust the number on the row.
Full changelog- ✓ Every plan now includes free rank checks each month. The allowance resets on the 1st and works even when your credit balance is spent elsewhere.
- ✓ Checks moved to the background. The page no longer locks while one runs, and several keywords queue instead of timing out.
- ✓ A lookup that fails is no longer billed and no longer recorded as a lost position. Your previous rank is kept and the page tells you the scan did not finish.
- ✓ A manual check now pushes the next automatic check out, so the same keyword is not charged twice in a row.

How often are my rankings checked?
Automatic refresh runs daily on paid plans and weekly on the free plan. It is a per keyword setting, so you decide which keywords are worth an automatic check. You can also check any keyword by hand whenever you want.
How deep does a check look, and what does "Not in top 50" mean?
A check reads the first 50 organic results for your keyword in the country you chose. If your domain is not in that range, the row reads "Not in top 50". It is a statement about the limit of the check, not an estimate of where you might be.
How many free rank checks do I get?
The free plan includes 30 rank checks a month. Paid plans include more. The allowance is counted per account, resets on the 1st of each month, and is separate from your credit balance, so spending credits on other modules does not stop your tracking.
Is 30 checks a month enough?
It covers 5 keywords on weekly automatic refresh for a full month, which is the shape most people start with. On top of that, a new account starts with 1,500 credits, and a check costs 10 to 50 credits depending on how deep it has to read. That is roughly 30 to 150 more checks before you have paid anything.
What happens when the free checks run out?
Checks keep working and are paid from your credit balance instead. Nothing is switched off, and the allowance comes back on the 1st.
Why do some checks cost more than others?
A check reads result pages in order and stops as soon as it finds your domain. A keyword in the top 10 is found on the first page. A keyword that is not in the top 50 costs a full scan, because every page has to be read before that answer is certain. Ranking well is the cheapest thing to track.
What happens if a check fails?
You are not charged, and your previous position stays on the row. The page tells you the scan did not complete and the check is tried again later. A position you still hold is never written down as a drop because a lookup failed.
Does checking a keyword by hand cost me twice?
No. A manual check pushes the next automatic check out, so the scheduled run does not repeat work you just paid for.
How many keywords can I track?
There is no cap on how many keywords you add. What is limited is how many checks you get each month, and how many keywords can sit on automatic refresh at once. The free plan allows 5 keywords on automatic refresh.
Which countries can I track?
12: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Türkiye, Australia, Canada, China. A keyword is tracked in one country, so tracking a keyword in two markets means adding it twice.
Does Rank Tracker send alerts?
Not yet. There is no email or Slack alert for a ranking change today. Changes are visible on the page, and each row shows when it was last checked.
