Editor's note

A few of these platforms are not abstract to me. From this list, I have personally worked with HubSpot, Zoho, and Monday.

I relied on HubSpot the most. At my digital marketing agency, I used it to track the processes we set up with clients and to turn our sales and support workflows into something dynamic and, more importantly, measurable. I also connected it to the form conversions coming in from Meta and Google Ads, which let me report on the full conversion flow with real numbers. That setup worked well enough that I started rolling it out to the clients I consulted for, walking them through the same measurement flow and giving them the technical support to run it themselves.

Over time, though, two limits became hard to ignore: HubSpot was not flexible enough where I needed real customization, and the features that would have closed that gap were priced steeply. As AI matured and made deep customization far more attainable, I decided to build my own CRM, one I could shape end to end without hitting a wall.

That experience is exactly why I keep coming back to one question when I look at this list: which platform gives you the most room to build. On that measure, Salesforce stands apart. Its metadata-driven architecture lets you customize the data model, logic, and interface from simple point-and-click all the way to full code with Apex and Lightning Web Components, without breaking future upgrades, and its AppExchange ecosystem extends that reach even further. In a market where AI is turning customization from a costly luxury into a genuine competitive lever, that depth of flexibility is a serious long-term advantage. My read is that it positions Salesforce to widen its lead and stay the platform others are measured against.
