Editor's note

Subscription billing and payment infrastructure is often one of the last things SaaS founders think about, yet one of the hardest to change later.

At first glance, all these tools seem to do the same thing: collect card details and charge customers every month. But there is an important difference. Some tools primarily process payments, leaving you responsible for invoicing, sales tax, and VAT across different countries. Others act as a merchant of record, handling the sale to your customer and taking responsibility for the associated sales tax and VAT obligations. Their fees are typically higher, but for a solo founder selling globally, they can remove a significant administrative burden.

Country eligibility matters, too. Some popular payment platforms do not support businesses registered in every country. Before choosing a tool, make sure it supports your business location.

That is why I recommend looking beyond transaction fees when choosing your payment infrastructure. Consider where your business will operate, who will handle sales tax compliance, and how difficult switching providers could become. Once customers have active subscriptions in one system, moving them to another can be complicated.

The list is updated every month with newly launched tools.
